Computing
Intent
The teaching and learning of computing at St Paul’s aims to provide an opportunity for children to be a part of our digital world.
They will learn to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and interact with the world around them. Internet safety is a priority and children will become responsible digital citizens and have the knowledge to stay safe online.
The key aims for computing at St Paul’s are:
- Computer Science: To apply a knowledge of algorithms and computer networks to design and create programs with a range of software.
- Information Technology: To use a range of technologies to accomplish given goals (e.g. collect, analyse, evaluate and present information).
- Digital Literacy: To be responsible digital citizens, use technology safely and identify how and where to get help if concerns arise.
Implementation
Computing is taught at St Paul’s alongside our topic with a skills focus. Our curriculum is designed to spark children’s interest in the digital world. We provide children with a solid foundation of skills which allows them to access this world, using a range of different technologies. These skills will be embedded throughout our curriculum and technology will be used to enhance their learning in all areas. Our computing curriculum is broken down into three areas: Computer Science, Information Technology, and Digital Literacy.
Early Years Foundation Stage
The children explore a range of hardware and software. They can complete simple programs and use technology as part of their daily life. This is incorporated into their free-flow activities.
Key Stage 1
The children will start to become familiar with creating algorithms and understanding that they are a set of instructions. They will create and debug simple programs using logical reasoning. Building on their exploration in EYFS, they will use technology for different purposes (e.g. to create, organise, and manipulate). They will recognise common uses of information technology beyond school. They will use technology safely and respectfully and be able to identify where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content.
Key Stage 2
The pupils will continue to develop their understanding of how to design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals. They will become familiar with the key terminology (such as sequence, selection, repetition) and use this confidently when coding. In Key Stage 2, the focus is on accomplishing goals using multiple hardware and software. This will include creating programs, collecting and analysing data, and presenting and communicating information. They will become good digital citizens, learning how to evaluate digital content. They will use technology safely and responsibly.
Impact
Technology is growing and rapidly shaping the world we live in. Our children will be equipped to become active members of a digital society. Our Computing curriculum will ensure that children at St Paul’s are equipped with the computational skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready both for the Key Stage 3 curriculum and life in the wider world, enabling them to access a wide variety of careers.
