PE

Intent

The learning and teaching of PE at St Paul’s aims to enrich children’s daily lives and help them to better their understanding of their bodies.

PE encourages self-confidence, communication, being part of a team, skills and the importance to set achievable goals to help develop resilience. PE helps provide the platform for the children to develop key values such as honesty, respect, passion, determination and team work. Our intent is that the teaching of PE will help pupils to improve key values and skills they will need later on in life in a fun and safe environment.

The key aims for PE at St Paul’s are:

Key Stage 1
  • To develop the children’s universal skills such as, throwing and catching, different movements, kicking, striking skills and team work.
Key Stage 2
  • To develop the children’s understanding of specific skills used in sports such as football, tag rugby, hockey, athletics, netball and basketball.
  • To have the opportunity to learn and take part in solo and group PE activities in school and to represent their school in competitions
  • To provide children a fun platform to be able to express themselves through dance and gym

Implementation

The children at St Paul’s take part in 2 hours of PE a week, 1 hour is focussed on outdoor games and the other hour is focussed on indoor such as gym and dance. Our curriculum is designed to inspire pupil’s curiosity about their bodies and what they can achieve in PE. The teaching style used to do this is by providing situations where the children have to make their own decisions based on prior practice to meet the desired outcome. To do this the children will need to have practiced and developed the key values such as team work, respect, determination and many more which are at the heart of all of their PE lessons. The children are able to set themselves achievable targets in their PE lessons to keep challenging their own learning. At the end of each topic the children will take part in a fun competition part of a team to practice the skills they have learnt and practiced so they can successfully implement the skills in a group activity. Children who have showed brilliant progress in the lessons that week, are rewarded with a certificate in the celebration assembly to reward their hard work.

Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum is to ensure that children at St Paul’s are equipped with physical and sport specific skills that will give them the opportunity to reach their potential in Key Stage 3 as well as enrich their enjoyment and understanding of the potential pathways created through sport and physical education. This will create a good base and give confidence to the children to explore further sporting activities outside of school in the future.
